About Shut the Box

Shut the Box is the old pub dice game, two-handed against the Ale-Wife. Shut the tiles that sum to your throw, and pray for the clean board. Play solo or live at the open tables, free in your browser, no ads, no sign-up.

How to play

Nine tiles stand. Roll two dice and shut any standing tiles that sum exactly to the throw. Once the seven, eight, and nine are down you may roll a single die instead. When a throw comes that nothing can answer, the tiles still standing are added to your tally, and the first tally to forty-five loses. Shut every tile and you win on the spot.

Tips

Shut the high tiles first to unlock the single-die roll and to shrink your leavings if the round dies. When a throw offers a choice, clear the biggest numbers you can.
