About Hangman Duel
Hangman Duel turns the old slate game into a fair fight, played against the Ale-Wife: rounds come in pairs — you set for me, I set for you — and the count of wrong calls decides the whole duel. The setter is dealt four words from the house bank and hands over the cruellest; the guesser gets the hint, the lattice, and eight lives. Play solo or live at the open tables, free in your browser, no ads, no sign-up.
How to play
Each round one player sets and the other guesses. The setter picks one of four dealt words — every word comes with its hint, shown to the guesser ("a bird", "a trade"). The guesser calls letters: a hit fills every seat that letter holds; a miss is a mark, and eight marks build the gallows whole for a round score of ten. After two pairs, whoever holds fewer marks as guesser takes the duel; a tie plays another pair, to five pairs at most, and a duel still level then is drawn.

Tips
As guesser, spend your first calls on the vowels the hint suggests, and let each hit narrow the shape. As setter, the cruellest word is rarely the longest — short words with rare letters and few vowels survive the most calls. Watch the count, not the round: losing a round by one mark can still win the duel.
