About Disputation

Disputation is a duel of assertions against the Pardoner, that silver-tongued seller of falsehoods that sound right. Twelve claims are drawn from the almanac’s six branches (chronicle, chart, physic, folio, green lore, and bestiary) and put to both chairs at once. Each calls true or false; the reveal names the truth and tells the story behind it. The higher count takes the disputation. Play solo, or take a seat at a live, rated table. How to play

Read the assertion and call it: true or false. Both chairs answer the same twelve in the same order, each in ignorance of the other’s call, and every reveal carries a gloss, the why behind the verdict. A right call is a point; after the twelfth the higher count wins, and an even count is honourably drawn.

Tips

The bank leans on the plausible lie: the Pardoner’s craft is a claim one notch off the truth, a right idea with the wrong century, the wrong ocean, the wrong beast. When an assertion is suspiciously tidy, ask which detail would be easiest to bend, and read every gloss: the almanac repeats its themes more than its questions.
